What Is an NTN in Pakistan?

A plain-English explainer of the National Tax Number — what it is, who needs to register, how it relates to your CNIC, and why it is not the same as being a filer.

An NTN (National Tax Number) is the identifier the Federal Board of Revenue uses for a registered taxpayer in Pakistan. For an individual it is generally your 13-digit CNIC; companies and businesses receive a separate NTN on registration. Having an NTN means you are registered — it does not, by itself, make you an active filer on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).

What NTN stands for

NTN is short for National Tax Number. It is the reference FBR attaches to a taxpayer's registration so income, withholding, returns and refunds can be tracked against one identity.

Who needs registration

Registration is tied to your circumstances — income level, business activity, property and other statutory triggers under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 — rather than to a single job title. People commonly register so they can file a return and appear on the ATL, which lowers the withholding tax they pay on banking, vehicles, property and more. Confirm your own obligation against current FBR rules.

NTN for individuals

For an individual, FBR generally uses your 13-digit CNIC as your NTN. There is no separate number to remember — your CNIC is how FBR identifies you as a taxpayer.

NTN for companies and businesses

A company, association of persons (AOP) or registered business is issued a distinct NTN when it registers with FBR, separate from any individual's CNIC. Business registration also brings its own filing obligations.

NTN vs CNIC

Your CNIC is your national identity number issued by NADRA. Your NTN is your tax registration with FBR. For individuals the two numbers coincide (the CNIC serves as the NTN); for businesses they are different. See NTN verification by CNIC to check a record.

NTN vs filer / ATL

Registration (NTN) and filer status (ATL) are not the same thing. An NTN says you are in FBR's system. The Active Taxpayer List says you are a current filer, which generally requires filing the relevant year's return on time. A registered person who has not filed remains a non-filer and pays higher withholding.

How to obtain / register an NTN

You register on FBR's IRIS portal with your CNIC and basic details; for individuals the CNIC becomes the NTN. Registration is only the first step — to actually be an active filer you then file your return. The full sequence is in the how to become a filer guide.

How to verify an NTN

Use FBR's official Online Verification Portal to confirm a registration by CNIC or NTN, and check ATL status separately. Full steps are in NTN verification by CNIC. CalcuPK does not verify NTNs and never collects your CNIC.

Common misconceptions

  • "I have an NTN, so I'm a filer." Not necessarily — you must be on the ATL, which follows filing your return.
  • "An NTN is a separate card/number I must buy." For individuals it is simply your CNIC; registration on IRIS is free.
  • "Registering once keeps me a filer forever." ATL status depends on continuing to file on time each year.
