Hanafi inheritance calculator

This calculator distributes an estate under Hanafi (Sunni) faraid. It deducts funeral costs, debts and a valid bequest (capped at one-third), then assigns each heir their fixed Quranic share or residuary portion, applying blocking, Awl and Radd. Shares are computed as exact fractions — never floating-point — so they reconcile to one whole estate before rupee amounts. It is an educational estimate; consult a scholar and lawyer.

Educational estimate, not a religious or legal ruling. Actual inheritance depends on sect, personal law, lifetime gifts, jointly-owned assets, legal title, succession certificates and provincial procedure. Consult a qualified Islamic inheritance scholar (mufti) and a Pakistan-based lawyer before distribution.

How the shares are calculated

Islamic inheritance distributes the net estate in a fixed order:

  1. Deductions — funeral and burial costs, then debts (including unpaid Mehr), then a valid bequest (Wasiyyat) capped at one-third of what remains.
  2. Fixed shares (furud) — each entitled heir receives a set Quranic fraction (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 2/3, 1/3, 1/6).
  3. Residue (asaba) — what remains goes to the residuary heirs; sons and daughters split it 2:1.
  4. Awl — if the fixed shares exceed the estate, all are scaled down proportionally.
  5. Radd — if the fixed shares fall short and there is no residuary, the surplus returns proportionally to the fixed-share heirs (never to a spouse).

Every share is computed as an exact fraction using whole-number arithmetic, so the shares reconcile to exactly one whole estate before any rupee rounding. The calculator then reconciles rounding onto the largest share so no rupee is lost or invented.

Frequently asked questions

Fixed-share heirs (ashab al-furud) — such as a spouse, parents and daughters — receive a set Quranic fraction like 1/2, 1/4 or 1/6. Residuaries (asaba) — typically sons and, in their absence, the father, grandfather or brothers — take whatever remains after the fixed shares. Sons and daughters together share the residue in a 2:1 ratio.
