How the COMSATS GPA calculation works
Every course contributes quality points, which are its grade point multiplied by its credit hours. Your GPA is the total quality points divided by the total credit hours you attempted. That weighting is why a 4-credit course moves your average roughly twice as much as a 2-credit one, and why a GPA is never a plain average of grade points.
- Non-credit and audit courses are excluded from both the top and bottom of the fraction.
- Failing grades still count toward attempted credit hours, so they lower the average even though they earn no credit.
Note on the grading scale. COMSATS uses relative grading for many courses, so the percentage bands here are indicative only. Enter the grade points printed on your CUI result card for an exact CGPA — that does not depend on the disputed bands.

Quality points = grade point × credit hours
GPA = Σ quality points ÷ Σ attempted credit hours
Worked example
Three courses: a 3-credit course graded 3.70, a 4-credit course graded 3.00 and a 2-credit course graded 4.00.
- 3 × 3.70 = 11.10 quality points
- 4 × 3.00 = 12.00 quality points
- 2 × 4.00 = 8.00 quality points
- Total: 31.10 quality points over 9 credit hours
- GPA = 31.10 ÷ 9 = 3.46
Why your actual result may differ
Universities differ on percentage bands, on whether grading is absolute or relative to class performance, on how repeats are treated, and on which courses count toward a degree. Departments within one university can differ too. Your official transcript is always the authority.
Grading scales compared: what an A is worth at each university
Pakistani universities all use a 4.00 scale, and students reasonably assume that means the same thing everywhere. It does not. The percentage that earns the top grade point differs by institution, so the same 82% on a transcript can be a different grade point at two universities — and two CGPAs from different universities are not directly comparable, whatever a job portal implies.

Bands come from the same configuration the calculator uses. Rows marked “Editable” are not published in a current official document by that university — enter the grade points from your own transcript rather than relying on a percentage mapping.
Converting GPA to a percentage (and why the answer is unsatisfying)
There is no official HEC conversion from a 4.00 CGPA to a percentage, and that is not an oversight. The mapping runs the wrong way: your university turned percentages into grade points using its own bands, and that step throws information away. Two students on 3.50 can have had markedly different percentages.
The formula circulating online — percentage = CGPA × 20 — comes from nowhere authoritative and produces answers that no Pakistani university would certify. Some institutions publish their own conversion table for their own graduates; a few foreign admissions offices apply their own. If you need a percentage on a form, ask your examination office for an official transcript conversion in writing. Do not compute one and present it as your result.
Probation, dean's list and scholarship thresholds
These numbers are set by each university in its own semester rules, and they differ. The pattern below is the shape most Pakistani universities follow — check yours in your student handbook, because the consequence of getting it wrong is a lost semester.
- Academic probation generally begins when the cumulative CGPA falls below 2.00. Probation is usually a warning with a recovery window, not an immediate dismissal, but repeated probation across consecutive semesters commonly is.
- Dean's list / merit list recognition typically needs a semester GPA around 3.50 or above, with a full course load and no failed or incomplete course that semester.
- Need-based and merit scholarships usually require a minimum CGPA to be maintained, often around 2.50 to 3.00. Falling below it can end the award mid-degree, so the CGPA planner above is worth running before you drop a course.
- Graduation at most Pakistani universities requires a minimum CGPA — commonly 2.00 for an undergraduate degree — regardless of how many individual courses you passed.
These are the common patterns, not your university's rule. CalcuPK does not publish a specific institution's threshold unless it has read it in that institution's own regulations.
Common mistakes in a COMSATS GPA
- Landing here as an applicant — admission aggregate is on the COMSATS merit page, not this GPA page.
- Reading the indicative percentage bands as fixed cut-offs, when CUI grades many courses relatively.
- Assuming the single-point grade table online matches CUI's HEC-range scheme, which it may not.
- Leaving an old attempt in the totals after a repeat, instead of letting the improved grade replace it.

- CGPA
- Cumulative Grade Point Average — the same calculation as GPA but across every completed semester, weighted by credit hours.
- Quality points
- A course's grade point multiplied by its credit hours. Summed across courses and divided by total credit hours, quality points produce the GPA.
- Credit hour
- A unit of a course's weight, usually reflecting one hour of lectures per week for a semester. Higher-credit courses affect the GPA more.
