PU merit calculator (Punjab University)

An admission aggregate converts each of your results into a percentage, multiplies it by the weight the institution assigns to it, and adds the weighted figures together. The weights are set by the admitting authority and are not negotiable — they are what makes one university's merit list rank candidates differently from another's.

University of the Punjab (PU) uses 25% Matric + 50% Intermediate + 25% PU admission test for Standard BS programmes (most departments) (2025–26). The calculator applies exactly those weights, shows the arithmetic for every component, and checks any hard eligibility floors separately — because a candidate can post a competitive aggregate and still be rejected for missing a minimum.

Steps the calculator follows

• Normalise each component to a percentage: marks obtained ÷ total marks.
• Multiply that percentage by the component's weight.
• Add every weighted contribution together.
• Compare each gated component against its eligibility floor.

Rules and exceptions that apply

• PU has NO single university-wide merit formula — merit is decided programme by programme. This 25/50/25 split is the dominant pattern for standard BS programmes; some departments (Fine Arts, LLB, engineering, Pharm-D) differ, so use the matching variant or check the prospectus.
• PU's admission test is now compulsory for all undergraduate disciplines and is PU's OWN test — not the HEC USAT. Engineering may also accept ECAT/SAT; LLB requires LAT plus the PU test; Pharm-D accepts MDCAT or the PU test.
• PU deducts 2 marks for each year of study gap, up to a maximum of 5 years (−10 marks). This calculator does NOT model the gap deduction — subtract it yourself if it applies.
• The Hafiz-e-Quran award adds 20 marks under the PU prospectus, contingent on an authenticated certificate attached to the original application (unlike medical admissions, where the 20-mark award was revoked). The optional toggle here adds up to ~2 aggregate points; confirm the exact effect on the PU merit list.
• PU expresses the academic part as a ratio of totals in which matric counts at one-quarter; the 25/50/25 split above is PU's published weighting for standard programmes.

Why your actual result may differ

Totals vary between boards, equivalence certificates change the marks used, and admission policies are revised between cycles. Quotas, category seats, campus choice and the strength of a given year's applicant pool all affect whether an aggregate is enough. This calculator produces your score under the published formula — it does not predict admission.

This is the difference that catches PU applicants out. UET, NUST and FAST each publish one formula per faculty. The University of the Punjab decides merit department by department, and the 25/50/25 split on this page is the dominant pattern for standard BS programmes, not a university-wide rule.

PU expresses the academic part as a ratio of totals in which matriculation counts at one quarter, which is where the 25/50/25 shape comes from. The admission test is PU's own and is now compulsory for every undergraduate discipline — it is not the HEC USAT.

Two PU-specific adjustments move your merit and are applied by the university, not by this calculator's core formula.

• Hafiz-e-Quran: +20 marks. Awarded on an authenticated certificate attached to the original application. The optional toggle in the calculator above approximates its effect on the aggregate; confirm the exact treatment on the PU merit list.
• Study gap: −2 marks per year, up to −10. PU deducts two marks for each year between your last qualification and your application, capped at five years. This calculator does not model the deduction — subtract it yourself if it applies to you, because it is large enough to change which department you make.

PU's published closing merits show a wide spread between campuses for the same degree. Computer Science closed at 87.18% on the New Campus in Lahore and 71.88% at the Jhelum campus in the same cycle — a difference of more than fifteen percentage points for the same qualification. The Gujranwala and Pothohar campuses sit between the two.
